I thought we were past that and were able to use whatever hardware in our PCs thanks to the abstraction layer that the OS provides. It makes me think of the 90s where some games would only support certain brands of graphics cards, sound cards etc. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with old or no name pads, but XInput will not work with them. I'm getting the impression that switching to XInput was a "business decision" at least in part. It's possible force feedback is handled differently with XInput and that's why XBOX 360 pads don't support it in DInput mode, but I also heard that the dirvers on Windows prevent it just because MS doesn't want you to use it in this mode.
